The severity of mosquito-borne illnesses and the prevalence of mosquitoes can vary greatly depending on the region and time of year you visit Thailand. Generally, mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever and malaria are more common in rural areas and during the rainy season, which runs from June to October.
For us, as we are traveling with two kids (5yo & 9yo), it’s also crucial to feel safe, calm, and prepared so we avoid late-night drama caused by itchy wounds after mosquito bites.
That is why it is always a good idea to take precautions to protect yourself from mosquito bites, regardless of the region or time of year that you are visiting.
To protect yourself from mosquito bites, you can take the following precautions:
- Use insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active
- Use mosquito nets or screens in your accommodation
- Stay in air-conditioned or well-screened areas
- Avoid standing water, where mosquitoes breed
It’s also a good idea to check with your healthcare provider or a travel medicine clinic for the most up-to-date recommendations on protecting yourself from mosquito-borne illnesses.
